The 12 Best Laser Level for Builders | Build Professionally

Some tools are a must for builders and engineers while planning and building a structure. A perfect laser level can be considered one of them as it makes the life of a builder much better. Investing on a good laser level is one of the best things that a builder can do since accuracy matters a lot. Even a slight mistake can cost you a lot.

However, since there are dozens of different laser levels available in the market, anyone can easily end up choosing the wrong laser level. In this kind of purchase, you need to focus solely on the perfect product for your requirement. And that is exactly why we have tested and tried many laser levels on the market and consulted with experts to fish out the very best ones for a particular usage. Hope this helps you find the right one for your need.

Red vs Green Laser Level

Lasers are a handy tool used in installing, constructing, surveying, and measuring accurate dimensions in various vertical and horizontal projects in many other cases.

You can see these two most common types of laser levels in the market: green and red. Naturally, most consumers are apprehensive about the difference. However, the great thing is that there is no difference in the accuracy of these two lasers. Basically, there are differences between budget, visibility range, brightness, and battery life.

Analyses have shown that the human eye is much more sensitive to green than red, so if you explore the brightness of both red and green laser light in the same category side by side, then you will see that green laser will look brighter than red. The same output power also makes the green laser 4 times more visible.

Also, green laser light is much more efficient and visible in daylight and can cover long distances, due to which green laser is primarily use in most construction and builders works.

12 Best Laser Level Guide in 2022

1. DEWALT (DW088K) Line Laser

DEWALT Line Laser, Self-Leveling, Cross Line, Red Beam (DW088K)

Starting with the most delicate line laser we have so far, the DeWalt DW088k line laser. Who doesn’t know mighty DeWalt? Years of dominance in the tool industry! Their product performance and build quality were always on the top of the line. Whether it is a welding machine, drill, saw machine, screwdriver, or laser level, they dominate everywhere. And likewise, this DW088k line laser is dominating the laser level industry.

Best Features of This Laser Level

This very model has everything that a professional builder will look for. It casts a laser line up to 100 feet. And if you have a laser detector, you can detect it reaches 165 feet. There are very few laser levels in the market that covers this much distance. The feature that makes its laser level more attractive is the dual beam. At the same time, it casts both horizontal and vertical lines, so making a cross line laser is very easy.

It is now coming into the most crucial part, the accuracy. It has an accuracy level of +-1/8-inches per 30′ and +- ¼-inches per 100′. Now an extremely satisfying feature, it is a self-levelling laser level, which means it determines the accurate level by own. And in any case, if the level goes out of the self-levelling range, it will start indicating by blinking lights that you will have to make the adjustment now. If we talk about durability, it is an extremely durable one.

It comes with a plastic and rugged rubber body that can withstand heavy abuse. The IP rating of this unit is 54, which makes it an extremely long-lasting and best laser level. Lastly, it comes with 3 AA batteries, and the batteries will run for 15 to 20-minutes easily on a single charge. This much run time should be enough, we think. Overall, this DeWalt DW088k line laser is a great piece that you don’t want to miss out on.

The Pros

  • Rugged design.
  • Extremely durable.
  • Dual-beam laser line.
  • Good battery run time.
  • Casts line up to 100 feet in distance.
  • Dust and waterproof.
  • Self-levelling laser level.

The Cons

  • It can’t lock it at a set position.
T.P. said,

Easy to use. There are buttons for both vertical and horizontal lazers. Tap on, tap off. The swivel magnets are priceless. The accessory clamp seems neat. Didn’t use it yet. The case is sturdy and fits the components well. Haven’t used in daylight yet but I expect the other reviews to be accurate about limited visibility. I found myself using it for more than I expected. Since I bought this, my hairline returned to highschool status, my unit grew 3 inches in length overnight, neighborhood women have started a fight club on my front lawn to compete for breeding rights with me. My dog even picks up her own poop for me now. The ROI on this product is 1000x.

Would recommend.

I’m a full time handyman, get about 5 jobs a day on average and have thousands of dollars worth of tools, I gotta say this laser level is probably one of the best tools out of them all. Forget about dewalts overpriced laser level that isn’t nearly as accuarate as this tavool tool. I’ve had it for a little while and done a few projects with it and the self leveling feature is unbeatable! Not to mention I had a very minor issue with the product and I co texted customer support within no time I was put in touch with a lovely employee who was willing to go to any means to settle my issue. I have to say all around a great product and to me for the price it is this tools is steal of a deal!

It is a highly suitable laser level for different kinds of layout and leveling applications. It offers two-beam projection, horizontal and vertical.

The laser colour is green, which is a highly visible colour even outdoor; it 4x brighter than other laser beams. And the range it offers is pretty satisfying as well. One more satisfying feature of this laser line is, it offers 360-degree projection, which means you can cover the entire room with it. Squyres and Company said,

I anguished for a while over this purchase. Its expensive. There are some Chinese models that probably do the same thing, but I have not used them head to head. That said, I have found this to now be an indispensable tool that I use in a multitude of applications. The thing has done for me what the oscillating saw did for me a decade ago. Lay tile, build and install cabinets in situ, drop lines to cut yards of carpet, hang various crap inside the house. Basically, if you need a line, and you want it square, this is for you. Well, it is if you have 500 bucks to spend on it. I think it probably costs more than any other garage related tool

Are you on a tight budget and looking for a good line laser within that? Then you don’t want to miss out on this, the Tacklife SC-L01-50 Feet Self-Leveling Line Laser. It comes at an affordable price and performs pretty good as well.

Thanks to the smart pendulum leveling system, this makes this model accurate. The accuracy range is +- 1/5-inches 30ft. It also has a self-leveling feature; it works when located within the 4-degree inclined surface horizontally and vertically. When it is out of the 4-degree range, the self-leveling won’t work, but the laser beam will start blinking to notify you that you need to adjust.

We found the laser line projection range is pretty good; it’s 50 feet which is more than enough for indoor tasks. And with the detector, projection can detect up to 115 feet. This laser level comes with a rugged outer shell which enables it to withstand heavy abuse in the worksite.

Absolutely a must-have tool.

This product saved the day on a structure I have been working on for quite some time. I am building an 18′ x 10′ dog pen with a roof….so essentially I’m building a building without the exterior walls. I thought I had the top of it all level before I bought this, and then realized there was an issue. When I mounted this laser level on one of the corner posts, it gave me a level laser line going across the top of the entire structure, and I saw that on the opposite end, the entire top of the structure was sloping 1/2″, which would have been problematic when it came time to do the roof. I was able to level the entire top of the structure up with this tool. I will never build anything significant without using this.

5. Huepar Box Outdoor Green Cross Line Laser Level

Self-leveling Laser Level - Huepar Box-1G 150ft/45m Outdoor Green Cross Line Laser Level with Vertical Beam Spread Covers of 150°, Selectable Laser Lines, 360° Magnetic Base and Battery Included

With the +- 1/13-inches 33 ft. accuracy, this Huepar Box-1G laser level promises to deliver ultra-bright light outdoor. It offers 130-degree horizontal and 150-degree vertical line projection for different kinds of alignment and leveling jobs. Whether it is installing a photo, paving tiles, door or window alignment, or furniture carpentry work, you will get the job done pretty easily with this very laser level.

Best traits of this Product

It delivers three lines, horizontal, vertical, and cross line. And you can select between these three lines with a single button. Features a smart pendulum and self-levels. And also indicates when out of level so that you will know. This model projects a green laser beam that is best for the outdoors since they are highly visible.

According to the manufacturer this laser level delivers 150 feet laser line range but according to the users, the range isn’t that long. The line is visible up to the 50-feet range and that is why we suggest you choose this laser level only for indoor use.

Features 4 AA alkaline batteries that deliver decent run time, 5 hours. However, replacing them with better mAh batteries will give a better run time. But for indoor lightweight jobs, we think a 5-hour run time is good. It can be mounted easily on most standard tripods. And if we come to durability, it performs well in this area.

The Pros

  • Three laser line projections.
  • Highly visible green laser beam.
  • Self-leveling laser line.
  • Easy to mount.
  • Durable laser level.
  • Fairly priced.

The Cons

  • Not suitable for outdoor.

Joshua said,

Mine has been running for 8 hours per day, 6 days a week for weeks now with no issues. It’s even survived a drop off a 6 foot ladder with no effect on accuracy. How can you not love that. Brighter than my $300 dollar cross-hair lasers, and very easy to see. I even bought another one as a backup in case it doesn’t survive my next drop off a ladder…but so far taken a beating and keeps working. I’ve been running it off rechargeable NiMH batteries fine if anyone is interested because it will chew through batteries running 8 hours each day.

This literally might be my most used, and favorite product I’ve purchased off Amazon.

6. BLACK+DECKER Line Laser

BLACK+DECKER Line Laser, Auto-leveling with Stud Finder (BDL190S)

Well, this Black Decker line laser is the most versatile laser level on the list. And the only reason is it is a two in one tool. Along with the laser line, this very model features a stud sensor as well. When drilling through the wall you need to be careful because inside the wall there could be a pipe, electric wire, metal, or anything else.

Some Features Of this Product

You will get to know what is inside the wall via the Stud sensor. It is an auto-leveling line laser and for small alignments inside the room, it is sufficient. However, for heavy-duty projects you shouldn’t opt for this one, go for a better option. It only projects horizontal lines so make sure you choose it for suitable tasks. The price is reasonable and the manufacturer offers a 2-year warranty.

The Pros

  • Very easy to mount.
  • Features stud sensor.
  • Auto-leveling laser line.
  • Reasonable price.
  • 2-year warranty.

The Cons

  • Projects a single line.
  • Not for bigger projects.
  • Not suitable for outdoor.

Bosh opines,

This thing is pretty cool! I used it to find studs and it works well as long as you don’t move it along the wall too quickly. I watched it tell me where 120V wires are which it seems like it was accurate but I haven’t spent time auditing its accuracy. I hung a picture with it as well and the laser level is bright and convenient with the auto leveling. Don’t beat it up too much as it feels very cheap but I care for all of my equipment and definitely recommend this if you do too.

I do machine embroidery and needed a crosshair to help me to hoop my embroidery projects straight. The only option prior was a “light bulb” and bulky fixture that holds the bulb. That option was more than 3 times the cost of this unit and this little guy doesn’t takes up room on my work table. I had my husband use a clamp to secure it to the bookshelf above my table. It’s adjustable and I am thrilled.

I recently used it to install and level all of the cabinets in my kitchen. The green laser is easy to see even in bright light and the auto-leveling is very accurate! I didn’t used the red plumb line feature but It would probably come in great for centering a chandelier over your dining room table. (or visa-versa, for centering your table under an already installed chandelier!)

When the granite guys came to install the granite they were impressed how perfectly level my cabinets were. They didn’t need to use any shims at all to install the granite because the cabinets were spot-on level.

I can HIGHLY recommend this tool if you have a need of leveling cabinets, pictures, or just about anything you want or need to level in your house!

Chinorican wrote,

I’ve been seeing videos of home remodels swearing by laser levelers for years. I didn’t buy one because I had a bad experience with a laser level in the past, the ones that spin and require constant checking. If I had just bought one I would’ve saved myself hours of checking and rechecking. Could’ve used it for tile, framing, picture hanging, you name it. So my only regret is not getting it sooner.

With regard to the reviews saying you can’t tilt it, I’m not sure what’s going on but I was able to tilt it with no problem (see picture). The main thing is you need to make sure it’s perfectly still. Otherwise it will not display. Also, the instructions say it will flash, letting you know that it’s not level. It flashes off for one second, on for 3 seconds. Not exactly a “lock” function as some have interpreted, but definitely usable for angled projects if you are okay with the flashing.

Bottom line is this tool will make your life easier. Just get one.

How to Choose the Best Laser level for the Job?

best laser level for builders

To be very honest choosing the right laser level isn’t an easy task at all. If you are a beginner that it would be hard for you. There are a lot of factors you will have to consider right before purchasing a laser level, from different types to beam types to mounting options, there is a lot to consider.

This might seem intimidating but if you give little effort you can choose the ideal one. We have made an in-depth buying instructions, where we have discussed each and every factor in detail so that beginners can easily understand and choose the right model for them. So let’s dive in without wasting time.

Types

Laser levels come in different types and each type is a little different from others. If you choose the ideal one for the task, you will have to understand each of the types, and then only you will end up picking the right one.

Line Laser

Well, this is the most commonly used laser level in the world. This laser level features two kinds of projection. It projects a horizontal or vertical line on the surface and obviously, the line it objects to is 100% accurate. And the other one is its 360-degree projection. You will love the 360-degree projection when you have four walls around you. The 360-degree projection will project will give an accurate line on all the floors which could be very satisfying for the construction workers.

Dot Laser Levels

As the name implies, dot laser levels project a dot light on the surface you want. It comes into play when you have to ensure the accuracy of the pipe or the wall from the roof to the ground is plumb. There is a different shape of the dot light, it could be square-shaped, or level, or plumb.

Rotary laser level

This one is not as common as line laser or dot laser though it is an extremely efficient laser. They project a bigger line in a rotary fashion. There are two types in rotary laser level, dual and single slope. The dual-slope types move the line in both the Y and X-axis. On the other hand, the single slope only moves across the Y-Axis.

Accuracy

Not all the laser levels come with the same accuracy level, there are two types of accuracy levels and you have to choose one. The two types are preset and self-leveling. We would suggest, you go with the Self-leveling accuracy level and the reason is, they will find the accurate level automatically all by themselves which is extremely satisfying. It is the inner pendulum that does the trick.

Having that said, self-leveling accuracy models are a little expensive which is pretty obvious. However, if you are on a tight budget you can go with the preset model that is affordable and it is not bad to go with that. The difference between these two models is, one finds its accuracy level automatically and in the present model, you will have to do the work in order to find the right accuracy. When you are choosing the preset accuracy level make sure that has a minimum rating of +-3Xm.

Colour

There are two types of laser colors, green and red. And when asked to people, some say red is best and some cheer for green. So it is up to you, the beam color that works best for you would be ideal. That being said, there are advantages to both these two color beams. The red beam is more enough for all kinds of indoor works, they work best indoor. Plus, they don’t consume much power as well.

On the other hand, the green beam is way too powerful than the red beam, 300X more powerful. And usually used when working outdoor where other light interrupts. In other words, the green beam is for heavy-duty tasks. And it consumes a lot of power.

Battery

You will check a bunch of things when picking the battery since it plays a major role. Things like the amp hour, life cycle, runtime, voltage, rating, etc. you have to check all in order to get your hands on a laser level that will give you satisfaction. Your laser level should run at least one full day on a single charge.

There are some batteries that will require you to charge twice a day, it’s better if you don’t go for those since there are better options in the market. You will find batteries that give 30-minutes of run time on a single charge. You better go with those. And then comes the life cycle. It means how many times you can charge a battery before it dies. So as you have already guessed, the more you can charge the battery that will be beneficial for you.

Another thing is the AMP rating, it determines how long the battery will last, the higher the rating, the longer the lifespan. The last thing you need to consider is the voltage. The higher the voltage the more powerful the laser beam will get. So always opt for a higher voltage battery.

Usability

There are some laser levels that come with very easy functionality, you will be able to figure out how to use them within minutes. And then there are some which are complex, you might need expert help in order to get a hang of those laser levels. So if you are a beginner, always stick to the easy-to-use one. The easy functionality doesn’t affect the performance of the laser level at all.

Let us make it easier for you. You will see some laser levels which require configuring before using and has a lot of buttons, these are most of the temple complex. Go for those which come with two or three buttons. In other words, go with the fewer button, the fewer button number, the easier it gets.

Beam type

There are two types of beam and which one should you pick depends on the task you have on hand. One is a horizontal beam and another is a dual beam. A horizontal beam will work fine for tasks like floor leveling. It will easily locate the irregularities. And the comes a dual-beam.

It delivers both horizontal and vertical beams. In other words, it is an all-rounder, can be used in all kinds of work. That being said, dual beams are a little expensive but they deliver proper value for the money as well.

Temperature range

If you want your laser level to serve you for a long time, then go for a vast temperature range laser level. The higher the temperature range, the more extreme temperature that would be able to withstand.

Mounting Thread

If you will be working with the laser level in both indoor and outdoor then make the model you pick comes with multiple mounting threads, otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to use the laser level everywhere. Make sure the laser level allows you to mount it on walls, rails, etc. If that allows you to mount that on a tripod, that would be great.

IP Rating

IP stands from Ingress Protection. It determines how much protection it can give the tool from water and dust. Construction areas would be dusty and watery, which is no surprise. But not every laser level has the ability to withstand it, some get damaged badly and end up dying.

So pick a laser level that comes with a higher IP rating. However, for indoor projects where there wouldn’t be much dust or water, IP rating might not be an issue there.

Remove functioning

There are some laser level models in the market that can be controlled by remote. This comes into play when there is no one to assist you in your work. That being said, remote control laser level models are not for heavy-duty tasks since they don’t offer great operating distance. But for indoor works it is fine.

Power Level

If you are picking a battery-powered laser level then make sure that comes with power levels. In case you are wondering what this is, it’s basically three tiny lights that tells you how much battery power is left. When the battery is fully charged, three lights will be on. When the battery is low, only one light will be on. So when you see there is only one light, then put the battery on charge.

Indicator

It will be wise to pick a laser level that comes with a warning indicator. So if anything goes wrong you will know it. Some laser level models come with audio indications and some with lights. And some shuts down automatically.

FAQs:

Is a green laser better than a red laser?

It all depends on the project. Green laser levels are often best for outdoor projects because they show up best on foliage. A red laser level is commonly used for objects within a building because it doesn’t reflect onto surfaces that may be reflective and has a limited range of light transgression. Blue laser level usually pointing purposes but as well it used for leveling applications and more industrial roles.
