Cayan Tower

Cayan Tower, Dubai Marina – The Skyscraper with a Twist

Cayan Tower – World’s Highest Twisted Tower

The architectural wonder and the world’s tallest twisting tower, known as Cayan tower, was designed by world-famous architect firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for Dubai. The project was developed by Cayan Group  Real Estate Investment & Development firm, owned by Ahmed M Alhatti. The most interesting thing about the tower that one ever came across is its structure. The 73-story and 307.8 meters  (1,010 foot tall) tower in Dubai, is world’s tallest twisting tower. The tower rotates at full 90 degrees from the base right to the top. Cayan tower, Dubai Marina is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Floor Plans

Cayan Tower Plan

The tower is a straight example of rational thinking, as seen from the Cayan tower construction of the building with repeating yet systematically placed components and floor plans. One can see this architectural structure all the way from Dubai Marina. The Cayan tower floor plan’s repetitive nature made it easier to build the apartment units (total of 495), which range from one to four-bedroom duplexes.

Some of the modern twisting skyscrapers use the non-twisting column grid to foothold the rotated floor plan structure, which makes it challenging to find a proper area for placing the columns due to differing floor plans. However, the engineers and architects at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) have to come up with a better alternative, as their client and developers of Cayan Tower did not want to give up on the economic value of the interior because of irregular front openings and undesirable column locations.

Building Construction

The construction of the Cayan tower began in 2006; and was on hold for a year and a half, because of the flooding of the foundation site. This happened after the wall that held back the Dubai Marina got ruptured in February 2007. The base of the tower was flooded by a mixture of sand and water. After all the necessary arrangements are made to avoid such distractions, the construction resumed in July 2008.

The tower takes a turn of 90 degrees from base to top. The building consists of a reinforced concrete core cylinder that runs from base to top of the tower, each floor rotates at 1.2 degrees around this concrete core at the building center. In order to determine the structural resistance to the wind, a three-dimensional model of the building was designed to analyze the stresses. Due to the repetitive floor planning, it got less complex for the architects and engineers to build the magnificent tower.

Cayan Tower Dubai Exterior

The exterior of Cayan tower consists of metal panels that are connected to a concrete column. The aluminum and glass wall is simple, just inclined at an angle as the tower twists. Silver painted panels are used, which stand 4 inches apart from the glass. The panels are designed and installed in a manner that maintains the privacy of the Cayan Tower apartments.

Still, the Cayan Tower is an architectural wonder created by the engineers and architects from the world famous architectural group Skidmore, Owings & Merrill(SOM). The Cayan Tower finished its construction before May 2013 and was inaugurated on June 10, 2013. Since then, it has been the tallest twisting tower in the world. The Cayan tower apartments are available for sale and rent after their completion.
